ELKHART LAKE, Wisc.  - Rinus VeeKay turned up the heat in the championship battle for the 2019 Indy Lights Series Presented by Cooper Tires with two pole positions, a dominant victory on Sunday and searing pace all weekend at the beautiful Road America facility in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Perfect weather conditions were on hand all weekend and after setting the pace in practice, VeeKay carried this momentum forward to claim pole position for both Rounds Eight and Nine of the 2019 season in his No. 21 Mazda Motorsports IL-15 machine. The first race of the weekend got underway in dramatic fashion with the whole field engaging in intense battles for position. At Turn Seven on the opening lap, VeeKay ran wide on exit and had to take to the grass. Upon rejoining the track, VeeKay was forced to defend his position from Robert Megennis while regaining control of his car.

The stewards judged this to be a block and a frustrated VeeKay was forced to serve a drive-through penalty which effectively ended his shot at victory. Despite this set-back, the rapid Dutchman re-joined the field at the back where he began his fight back in earnest. Setting consecutive fast laps, VeeKay quickly closed the gap to the pack and began carving his way back through the field. With a fastest lap of 1:56.0832, VeeKay was able to eventually finish seventh and claim important points in the championship.

Come Sunday morning, however, VeeKay was not to be denied in the second race of the doubleheader weekend. Starting from pole position once again, the Mazda Motorsports driver made a perfect start and set about dominating the 20-lap race in perfect style thanks to leading every lap, setting the fastest lap and finishing nearly 13 seconds ahead of second place driver, Ryan Norman.

“This race, I felt like I took everything out of it," said a delighted VeeKay. "I didn't make any mistakes and the team gave me a great car. Even when things don't work out in my favor, it's amazing to have these people around me making it possible for me to win."

In their quest for the 2019 Indy Lights title, VeeKay and his Juncos Racing team now head to the streets of Toronto for Rounds 10 and 11 of the championship, July 12-14. The young Dutchman now sits a mere three points behind championship leader, Oliver Askew. With everything to play for, fans can watch all the action live online via NBC Sports Gold.
