LEXINGTON, OH – Team Pelfrey’s Garett Grist had a roller coaster ride during Rounds 14 and 15 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Given Grist’s past experience in 2015 where he qualified on pole for both Pro Mazda races, the Canadian was excited to be back at a track where he has enjoyed so much success.
Friday’s two practice sessions were extremely important for Grist since the remaining Indy Lights teams were able to test earlier in the season at Mid-Ohio. Friday morning’s practice session was the first time Grist was able to put rubber on the track with Team Pelfrey’s No. 3 Mac Tools Indy Lights car, Presented by Cooper Tires. Grist was ninth in Friday morning’s practice session with 7-minutes remaining when he was overtaken by Carlin Motorsport’s Neil Alberico and ultimately finished tenth.

Indy Lights second practice set for Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET was cancelled due to extremely poor weather conditions.

Grist’s qualifying efforts were strong as he positioned himself in third during most of qualifying however; as the session concluded he fell to ninth. The rookie had a consistent drive in Race One on Sunday with a best lap time of 1-minute 13.3976 seconds with a tenth place finish.
Drivers took the green flag Sunday for Race Two at 12:20 p.m. ET. The Team Pelfrey driver had an exciting first lap where he passed four cars with a lap time of 1 minute and 19:7116 seconds. As Grist was battling for the fifth position, his right rear tire blew causing him to go off course ending his race.
Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires will be back in action at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, NY on September 2-3.
Garett Grist, No. 3: “It was bit of an up and down weekend for us. Being the only team that didn’t test at Mid-Ohio we knew we needed to maximize practice. Unfortunately, half the practice was rained out. We were P3 for most of qualifying which was nice. Race Two I passed four guys on the first lap then my right rear tire exploded. We think I ran over some debris. Never had that happen before, definitely was a crazy ride. We were battling for 5thwhen it started going down. We learned a lot though and know what we need to change for the next race. The team did a great job a usual.”
