INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Vacaville, Calif., native TJ Fischer took the reins of the #2 Team Pelfrey Indy Lights car this weekend during the seventh annual Chris Griffis Memorial test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Having raced in USF2000 and Pro Mazda with Team Pelfrey, Fischer became the first driver to have sampled all three levels of the Mazda Road to Indy with the team.

“Incredible,” said the 23-year old after his first outing in the 450 horsepower racecar. “Completely different from anything I’ve ever driven in the past, but in the best way.”

Fischer displayed great progression during the two-day event on the challenging Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, a track that saw the Californian nab two Pro Mazda podium finishes in May this year. Having never sampled an Indy Lights car before, he was able to end the event just 1.1 second adrift from the fastest driver, Colton Herta, a multiple Indy Lights race winner.

“This weekend at the Chris Griffis Memorial test was very productive. Running in the Indy Lights Car this weekend was a total blast, it has a lot of downforce, and it’s a proper car. Initially, it was a lot of car, but we built in the rhythm, and I started to get quicker. Once we got more speed, and worked out small problems with the car, it was all about getting some longer runs in, and working on the balance. After we got the car figured out, it was all about me being the squishy bit in the middle, just learning how to drive.”

TJ Fischer will now continue working towards his 2018 season, details of which are expected to be determined in the next few weeks. Fischer, who is also diagnosed with asthma, will also continue progress on his asthma awareness campaign, Project O2, during the off-season to increase reach and awareness.
