Leeds, Alabama – Juncos Racing’s Toby Sowery delivered two top-five finishes in the Indy Lights Grand Prix of Alabama Presented by Cooper Tires this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park. Teammate Sting Ray Robb earned two top-10 finishes in his first Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires race weekend.

After a year hiatus due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires returned to the track kicking off the season at Barber Motorsports Park. The 2020 Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires champion Sting Ray Robb made his debut in the No. 2 Road To Indy scholarship car and veteran Toby Sowery driving the No. 51 Juncos Racing car completed the Juncos Racing lineup.

The doubleheader event kicked off with one practice session Thursday afternoon. Sowery finished the session third while Robb was 10th.

The following day the 13-car field completed two qualifying sessions. Sowery qualified fifth and Robb qualified ninth for Round 1. Qualifying for Round 2 mirrored the first qualifying session with Sowery taking the fifth position and Robb starting ninth.

After a year and a half since the last race for the Indy Lights series drivers were eagerly set for the first race of the season. Sowery, who started third would maintain his position, before dropping back to fourth midway through the race and would end his day just off the podium. Robb picked up a top-10 finish in his first Indy Lights race, finishing eighth.

The weekend concluded Sunday afternoon with Round 2. Sowery, who started fifth, was able to make his way to fourth during the first few laps. He went on to pick up his second top five of the weekend, finishing fourth. Robb, who started ninth, finished for the second time inside the top-10 in eighth.

Team Owner Ricardo Juncos said, “We are thrilled to be back on track running in the Indy Lights series after the 2020 season was canceled. Even though we have not had many test days on track prior to this weekend, we were pleased with the progress and gains we made at Barber. Toby Sowery and Sting Ray Robb did an excellent job working together with the team, providing great feedback to make improvements each time we went on track. I want to thank everyone for all of their hard work and look forward to a great week at St. Pete!”

The Indy Lights Championship continues next week with Rounds 3 and 4 April 23-25 on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Toby Sowery: “It’s a bittersweet weekend, we had great pace, just a lack of testing didn’t help us. The team put together a great car, but when everyone else has been testing more than us we are going to be in this deficit. The guys did a great job improving the car throughout each day. A mistake in Race 1 cost us a podium. Today in Race 2, it was just unfortunate, the situation was not in our control and it cost us another podium. Overall, we learned a lot and made some impressive improvements and will move on from here to St. Pete.”

Sting Ray Robb: “I was really happy to check off my first Indy Lights event. Race 1 was more of a survival than a competition, but I was really happy to keep learning what the car is like in aero and behind others in the draft. I just worked on my racecraft, as it is just really hard to pass here in Barber. For Race 2, I was really happy with how the car was set up, but early mistakes cost us a better finish. I was happy to move forward after some other drivers sent it off, so we were able to get by them and improve our finishing position. A huge shout out to Juncos, they worked really hard this weekend putting together a great race car, which we really showed at the end of today’s race. Now we will move onto St. Pete and thank you to everyone who has kept me in the car. I love running the Road to Indy scholarship colors.”
