AUSTIN, Tex. – In what proved to be a challenging weekend for Rinus VeeKay and his Juncos Racing team, the young Dutchman was able to overcome various challenges to walk away with a valiant second-place finish in Race One and a fourth-place finish in Race Two.
After struggling for optimum speed in practice as well as suffering a small mechanical issue in Qualifying One, VeeKay produced a storming drive in Race One to fight back all the way to second thanks to a well-executed drive. Having protected his Cooper tires in the first half of the race, VeeKay went into over drive for the second half of the race picking off Ryan Norman, David Malukas, Toby Sowery and Rob Megennis to claim second-place behind Oliver Askew in what was one of the most thrilling Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires races in recent seasons.
Starting from the third position for Race Two, VeeKay had his eyes firmly focused forward on securing another positive result. Unfortunately, a compromised start due to wheel spin under initial acceleration which hampered the Mazda Motorsports driver’s progress, leaving him to battle traffic in the middle of the pack. After an action-packed and hard fought race, VeeKay was able to fight back to fourth and cement his second-place position in the championship standings.
“Overall, it was an up and down weekend for us,” said a reflective VeeKay. “ We seemed to struggle for speed throughout most of the weekend but I’m really happy with how we fought in Race One and finished second, which felt like a huge accomplishment. Race Two wasn’t my best as I experienced a lot of wheel spin at the start. It was a struggle to get past traffic and claim fourth position, but I will be sure to improve for the next race. I’m very much looking forward to the rest of the season.”
The Mazda Motorsports driver, who is also sponsored by JUMBO, La Place, and Team Netherlands/ KNAF Talent First, now sits second in the 2019 Indy Lights Series Presented by Cooper Tires drivers’ championship, six points behind championship leader Askew. The series now moves on to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, May 9-11 for Rounds 5-6 of the championship. Fans in the U.S. can watch the action live online on NBC Sports Gold, while fans around the rest of the world can tune in via the Road To Indy TV app and website.
