MONTEREY, CALIF. – It had been 369 days since Sean Rayhall had last competed in the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires series. Rayhall’s return came after finishing in second place to eventual Indy Lights Champion Spencer Pigot at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Although making his season debut at the final race weekend, Rayhall impressed the field and Team Pelfrey IL.
The 21-year-old finished second in the Friday practice sessions, with rookie Garett Grist following closely behind. Rayhall and Grist qualified their Dallara-Mazdas sixth and seventh respectively.
In Saturday’s race Rayhall got off to an outstanding start, gaining two positions and out in front of title contender Santiago Urrutia. Rayhall settled into fourth place for the rest of the 30-lap contest. Grist made his way up to sixth position behind Urrutia before suffering an engine glitch on the last lap.
In Race Two, Rayhall fell from sixth to eighth after the first two corners. Grist maintained his position but was turned around on the exit of Turn Four, bringing out a full course caution on lap one. Fortunately, the Canadian’s car didn’t suffer any mechanical damage and he was able to catch up to the field under yellow without being lapped. Rayhall finished the race behind Andre Negrao in eighth while Grist completed his rookie campaign with a 15th-place finish.
The Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca event weekend marks the conclusion of Team Pelfrey’s first season in all three categories of the Mazda Road to Indy. The team’s best result came at the first weekend of the season when Scott Hargrove finished in second place in the team’s debut race.
