Birmingham, Ala. – Rising Star Racing’s Spencer Pigot will start Saturday’s Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires race at Barber Motorsports Park from the pole after setting a fast lap time of 1:12.386-seconds during the 40-minute qualifying session. It’s Pigot’s best start so far this year in his rookie Indy Lights campaign with Juncos Racing after having previously started second at Long Beach.

The result was a new Indy Lights track record – in fact Pigot broke the Indy Lights record just 13 minutes into his first practice session of the day.

Pigot won both Pro Mazda events in last year’s double-header at Barber Motorsports Park on the way to taking the 2014 Pro Mazda championship title and hopes to breakthrough for his first Indy Lights win at the challenging Alabama Road course this weekend.

“It feels great to start on the front row - and on the inside this time is going to be great,” said Pigot, who will take the green flag for the 40-lap Legacy Indy Lights Race 1 at 2:50 PM Central Time on Saturday.  “A big thanks to Mazda Cooper Tires, I wouldn’t be here without them. Thank you to Mockett, Rising Star Racing, MOBE, Stutz, BAD, D-A and everyone who helps me out. It’s a big day for us. I just need to make it through Turn 1 and hopefully come out of it in the lead. Barber is a tough place to pass so qualifying is very important and I’m starting in the best possible spot.”

Fellow Rising Star Racing driver Neil Alberico qualified his No. 3 Cape Motorsports with WTR Mazda entry fifth for the Pro Mazda race on Saturday which is set to go green at 10:15 AM local time. He and the Cape team worked through a test day on Thursday and a practice on Friday morning to continually improve the car.

“We were struggling big time yesterday and this morning so we kind of went back to square one and it was a huge improvement,” said Alberico, who currently leads the Pro Mazda championship. “Obviously we want to be faster and we want to be on the pole but at least we’re within a couple of tenths now so we can fight for the win tomorrow and the next day. We’re going for it tomorrow.”
