Ed Jones will start the Indy Lights Freedom 100 from pole position after rain brought qualifying to an abrupt holt this morning.  The Carlin man was the quickest runner when the session was suspended with several drivers yet to qualify, including Felix Serralles.  With the session unable to restart, the starting under for the Freedom 100 will be set by championship order.  Jones therefore starts from pole, Serralles from fourth and Alberico from 15th.

Under grey and overcast skies, qualifying took place this morning, one hour earlier than scheduled in an attempt to get the session completed before the forecast thunderstorm hit the Indianapolis Speedway.

Fourth in the qualifying order was Alberico, who went out on track and set a two lap average of 195.041 mph.  10th up in the qualifying line was Jones, who put his Carlin Indy Lights car on provisional pole with an average time of 197.078mph.  Just a few minutes later though the session was aborted, with an incoming storm halting proceedings, with Jones still top of the timing screens.

With the weather system over Indianapolis bringing prolonged rain, the session was cancelled, leaving the remaining drivers unable to qualify.  The starting under for tomorrow’s race will therefore be set by championship points order with championship leader Jones therefore taking pole.

Speaking about his starting position, Jones said, “It’s a great result to be on pole although it’s obviously not great to get it the way we did.  But I got my head down on track and we were P1 when the session was aborted.  I’m looking forward to the race, we know we have a good race car.  I’m not sure how it’s going to play out; you never know whether anyone is going full attack or letting people past in practice, but we’ll do what we can.  Hopefully the weather clears so we can see where we are and push hard for the win.”

Tomorrow’s Freedom 100 is due to commence at 12.30 weather permitting.
