Brabham Frustrated with Fifth at Pocono

LONG POND, Pa. – Matt Brabham endured a tough weekend to finish fifth in round eight of Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires, held at the Pocono 2.5-mile tri-oval.

Friday’s practice was completely washed out with heavy rain in the morning, and weeping water in Turn Three proving difficult to stop. The Indy Lights event became a one-day affair with Brabham having to practice, qualify and race all on Saturday.

Despite having never seen the tricky tri-oval before, Matt was quickly up to speed and having just posted the fastest speed, entered the pits a little too fast, locked the rear brakes and spun into the inside wall damaging the front and rear suspension.

The Andretti Autosport team managed to repair the car in time for qualifying, but was unable to change the gearing. Unfortunately in qualifying trim Matt was on the rev limiter and only qualified a disappointing fifth.

The race started well with Brabham hauling himself up on to the leading train, when an accident brought the pace car out. On the restart Matt had to get off the throttle and immediately lost touch with the leading three. Fourth place was where the frustrated third-generation driver crossed the finish line, but a blocking penalty dropped him a position in the final results.

“It wasn’t the race I really wanted. It was kind of boring just sitting going around and around on my own for a little bit. I think I had a really fast car at the start, and I was able to quickly catch the leaders. After the restart, I just backed out because I got a little nervous of the aero push and I lost too much. Once I lost touch with the leaders in the tow, I couldn’t get back up there and didn’t have quite enough speed to really challenge and catch up. I really wanted to fight for a win, but it wasn’t our day. But thanks to my sponsors MAZDASPEED/United Fiber & Data we will get them at the next one.”

Round 9 is on the Toronto street circuit in two weeks, on July 18-20.
