Andretti Recap TO 2019

After two thrilling rounds of competition in Toronto, the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires team now takes a weekend break before returning to racing at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for another doubleheader weekend July 27-28.

TORONTO RECAP:

RACE 1.

Sunshine and clear skies welcomed Race 1 on the streets of Toronto for the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires team. Points leader Oliver Askew led the Andretti Autosport trio to the checkered flag, taking the second spot of the podium. Askew passed championship competitor Rinus VeeKay on the first turns of Lap 1 to take the second position and ultimately extending his championship lead to six points.

Ryan Norman drove a quiet, consistent race pushing for a podium position but finished just shy in fourth. Norman jumped one position on the championship charts to third, the highest he's sat in the championship standings of his Indy Lights career.

During Race 1 qualifying, rookie Robert Megennis made contact with the wall, suffering damage and resulting in a ninth-place start for Saturday's race. Megennis was full focus ahead during the 35-race and jumped three positions to finish sixth.

RACE 2.

During Sunday's Race 2, rookie driver Oliver Askew started from the pole but fell back to third in the opening lap. On Lap 25, Askew was able to regain the lead and led a total of 17 race laps before capturing the checkered flag. Askew's fourth-career Indy Lights win extended the young American's championship lead to 25 points.

Ryan Norman lost ground after an off-track moment early in the race, but battled back for a fourth-place finish. Norman was closing in on a podium when the checker flag fell, but ultimately just missed out on the podium celebration, leaving Toronto with a pair of fourth-place finishes and valuable championship points.

Robert Megennis drove a quiet race during Sunday's 40-lap event. Gaining one position in the race, Megennis head back to the U.S. with six career top-five finishes in Indy Lights.

RACE 1:
"I think we had good pace in the beginning, but we struggled a little in the end. Hopefully we'll be a bit faster tomorrow and have a better starting position. I have to give a big thanks to Index Invest and Andretti Autosport for giving me the opportunity to be here. We extended our points lead today, so overall it was a good day for us."

RACE 2:
“For some reason, I got a bad launch off the line [on the start] but, fortunately, the first one was waved off, so I got a good start then. Once [Telitz and VeeKay] got in front of me they were battling, and I had a feeling something could happen. I was kind of pacing myself and saving my tires. Unlucky for them, but very happy for everyone on the Index Andretti Autosport car. This is my engineer, Doug Zister’s, first win in his hometown of Toronto so very happy for him. The goal right now is to win races and then we can be conservative later. We have the biggest lead of the season so far. We’re going to have to capitalize on that in the next couple of races. Andretti Autosport was really strong at the next couple of tracks, so we’re going to look to do the same.”

RACE 1:
"Today went pretty well. We got up to speed pretty quickly and fell into a rhythm. I tried to save some push to pass in case the guys in front of me slowed down towards the end. The glove on my left hand ripped a little and I lost a lot of grip on my left hand so I was struggling a little to hold on to the steering wheel through all the bumps between Turns 9, 10, and 11- so that was a little rough. It was a solid result - we moved up to third in the championship and just have to keep chipping away and hopefully we’ll have another strong result tomorrow."

RACE 2:
“Overall today was pretty decent, actually. We had technical difficulties in qualifying so started at the back. Then I made a mistake on Turn 3 on the second lap trying to pass a car – over-broke myself. I was really, really far behind and just threw down some flyer laps and caught up. I think if we had one more lap, I could have got a podium. There’s a lot to take away this weekend; we finished where we needed to gain some points and are building a gap there. We’re going back to Mid-Ohio which is of course my favorite track. I feel like we’ll definitely contend for some wins there. I’m excited.”

RACE 1:
"Race 1 was not really what we were looking for. The car was pretty good, but I don’t know where we were losing all the speed to the leaders. It took a little too long to get around Kohl at the beginning and I think thats what really held us up. We’ll come back tomorrow and I know we’ll be strong. Hope to put the 27 car on the podium tomorrow for Palo Alto Networks, Optiv, CyberArk and SailPoint."

RACE 2:
“It was kind of a rough weekend overall for us. We were just kind of lacking speed. I think we really hurt ourselves in practice and qualifying with an incident and having some mechanical problems – we were just playing catch up all weekend. Thanks to Andretti Autosport for an awesome car. Thanks toPalo Alto Networks, Optiv, CyberArk and SailPoint for everything. We’ll show up at Ohio and be a helluva lot stronger than we were here.”
