Andretti RA 2019 R1

It was an action-packed afternoon for the Cooper Tires Grand Prix at Road America Race 1. Veteran Indy Lights driver Ryan Norman drove to victory for the first time in the 2019 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires season and handed the Andretti Autosport Indy Lights team its fifth win of the season. Rookie Robert Megennis fought his way from fourth to pass two cars in the final few laps and finish on the podium in second, while Oliver Askew brought home a fifth-place result.

Tune into the Cooper Tires Grand Prix at Road America Race 2 Sunday with live coverage at 9:50 a.m. ET on NBC Sports Gold.

  • CHAMPIONSHIP: 4th (159 pts.)
  • OF NOTE: Second-career Indy Lights win//Led a total of 18 laps//Will start second for the Cooper Tires Grand Prix at Road America Race 2
"We had a rough start at the beginning of the year. I felt like my driving was off. I used the Freedom 100 as momentum heading into this weekend and I knew I was fast here and we belonged to be up front. The race car was really solid and held on all race long. I want to thank Cooper Tires for giving me tires that were underneath me the entire race and huge thanks to Andretti Autosport for giving me such a great car. Hopefully we can come back and win again tomorrow."

      • STARTED 4th//FINISHED 2nd
      • CHAMPIONSHIP: 3rd (171 pts.)
      • OF NOTE: Battled with Toby Sowery and Aaron Telitz in final five laps to advance up to second from fourth//Led the first lap of Race 1 after Rinus VeeKay had to serve a penalty allowing Megennis to inherit the lead//Qualified fifth for the Cooper Tires Grand Prix at Road America Race 2
"The first lap was insane. I had no idea what was going on. I was just trying to pass as many cars as possible. I got a good jump off the start and passed both of my teammates to get up to second. From there, I went to work on (Rinus) VeeKay. I was leading after the first lap then before I knew it I was in fourth. It was hectic but we had a great car. Thank you to the whole Andretti Autosport team for giving me such a great car out on track today."

          • STARTED 3rd//FINISHED 5th
          • CHAMPIONSHIP: 1st (207 pts.)
          • OF NOTE: Dealt with improper handling throughout Race 1//Will start the Cooper Tires Grand Prix at Road America Race 2 from the fourth position
"We had a bit of a disappointing day in Race 1. The team found something loose in the cockpit post race that caused me to have improper handling during the race. Hindsight, it was a good points day for the No. 28 team. We are prepared and expect to have a more competitive day tomorrow in Race 2. Big congrats to Ryan (Norman) on his first road course win. The whole Andretti Autosport Indy Lights team is carrying a lot of momentum heading into the second half of the season."
