AA St. Pete R1 2019

With the first of two Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires races on the streets of St. Petersburg complete, the Andretti Autosport team put on a strong display. Rookie Oliver Askew earned his first Indy Lights podium with a third-place finish. Heat, a tough track and competitive field made for minimal passing on track and resulted in zero yellow flags in the 35-lap race.

Tune in to NBC Sports Gold or the Road to Indy TV app at 10:05 a.m. ET tomorrow for the second Indy Lights Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

  • CHAMPIONSHIP: 3rd (22 pts.)
  • OF NOTE:
    • Earned his first career Indy Lights podium
    • Starting on pole for tomorrow's Indy Lights Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Race 2
"A podium for my first Indy Lights race really isn’t too bad at all. I'm really excited our guys with Andretti Autosport and Bob Stellrecht. I have to thank them for the support and the opportunity to be here. We're looking forward to starting on the pole tomorrow and I think we can come up with a better result. Hopefully we can make it through Turn 1 clean starting from pole, it’s the best spot on the grid. Pole here with clean air is ideal with all the twists and turns on the tight track. It’s also going to be really hot here tomorrow making the dirty air worse. I'm really looking forward to having fun tomorrow and hope everyone enjoyed the show we put on today."

      • STARTED 5th//FINISHED 6th
      • CHAMPIONSHIP: 6th (15 pts.)
      • OF NOTE:
        • Fought for the fourth position early in the race before settling into sixth
        • Starting third for tomorrow's Indy Lights Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Race 2
"It was a fun race. Started in fifth and didn’t quite get the best start and ended up in sixth. Had a good battle for fifth but drove the front tires off and had to settle for sixth overall. It’s my first Indy Lights race and we will only improve from here. It is what is and we will be better tomorrow. Thanks again to the team, thanks to Palo Alto Networks, CyberArk, Optiv and SailPoint for getting me out here and making this all happen."

          • STARTED 7th//FINISHED 7th
          • CHAMPIONSHIP: 7th (14 pts.)
          • OF NOTE:
            • Started his third season in Indy Lights when today's 35-lap race was waved green
            • Starting seventh in tomorrow's Indy Lights Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Race 2
"Sadly, it was very important in qualifying to get the position as there was pretty much no passing in the race and everyone settled in. Unfortunately, we didn’t have any good qualifying runs this weekend. We are just going to try to salvage as many points as possible and stay consistent. The plan moving forward is to keep chipping away at it throughout the long season."
