COOPER TIRES INDY LIGHTS GRAND PRIX OF MID-OHIO
RACE 2 DEBRIEF
07.04.2021

Kyle Kirkwood completed a weekend sweep by scoring a victory in Race 2 of the Cooper Tires Indy Lights Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio. Kirkwood was able to capture the lead from Andretti Autosport teammate and polesitter Danial Frost on Lap 2. After a mid-race restart, Kirkwood held off a charge from Frost, who would claim second once again on the weekend. Devlin DeFrancesco defended a late-race pass on the final lap to capture fifth while Robert Megennis made a pass in the closing laps to take the flag in seventh.

With his 11th career victory at Mid-Ohio, Kirkwood extends his points lead over David Malukas with the series heading into a summer break. The 2021 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires drivers will be back in action August 19-21 for Rounds 13 and 14 at World Wide Technology Raceway (Gateway).

KYLE KIRKWOOD
No. 28 ROAD TO INDY / COOPER TIRES / CONTRACTION CONTRACTORS CLUB DALLARA
START FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP
2 1 1ST / 291 PTS.
OF NOTE: Led 34 laps to his sixth victory of the 2021 Indy Lights season // Stretches points lead to 12 points ahead of David Malukas
"It was a fantastic weekend. Like I said yesterday, Mid-Ohio is one of my favorite tracks. Having both Danial (Frost) and I finish first and second in both races, I couldn’t ask for anything better than that. We were able to fend off the HMD cars there at the end. Even after the restart, we felt super strong. Hats off to all the Andretti Autosport team. The car was just unreal here. I’m super happy to get these two wins. That’s five wins in the past six races so hopefully this continues."

DANIAL FROST
No. 68 DEN-JET DALLARA
START FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP
1 2 4TH / 203 PTS.
OF NOTE: Collected his third podium-finish in a row // Moves into fourth in the championship
"It was a good result. Kyle (Kirkwood) got me on the outside of Turn 4 and I couldn’t really do much with the push-to-pass, so I settled into second. I tried to get him back after the restart, but he covered it up pretty good. Congrats to him. Definitely disappointed that we didn’t get the victory because we had the pace to do it, just lost it at the restart. Overall, I’m very proud of this weekend. The Andretti Autosport team did a great preparing the car. We’ve done an excellent job all weekend with being in the top three in each session, so I’m very proud of that."

DEVLIN DEFRANCESCO
No. 17 POWERTAP DALLARA

Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport
START FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP
5 5 6TH / 190 PTS.
OF NOTE: Held his position against a charging Toby Sowery to capture his sixth top-five finish of the season
"We had a good start and was able to get alongside (David) Malukas in Turn 2, but he was able to get ahead of me in Turn 4. After that, it was a bit of a struggle for the rest of the race. We need to find a bit more speed from my side and to work hard with my engineer Mark Bryant to see if we can do better around Mid-Ohio."

ROBERT MEGENNIS
No. 27 ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT DALLARA
START FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP
6 7 7TH / 183 PTS.
OF NOTE: Despite losing a two positions in the opening laps, Megennis challenged Benjamin Pedersen and made a late-race pass to finish Race 2 in seventh
"We qualified sixth and got passed early on and was held up for most of the race in traffic, so I couldn’t really move forward. I slipped back to eighth but was able to pass (Benjamin) Pedersen for seventh at the end. We’ll turn our focus to Gateway."
