COOPER TIRES INDY LIGHTS GRAND PRIX OF MID-OHIO
RACE 1 DEBRIEF
07.03.2021

Kyle Kirkwood continues to hold a perfect winning record at Mid-Ohio by winning Race 1 of the Cooper Tires Indy Lights Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio. Starting from pole position, Kirkwood led every lap en route to his fifth win of the season, and in the process, reclaiming the points lead over David Malukas. Andretti Autosport teammate Danial Frost was able to gain one position from the start to second place – matching his best finish of his Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires-career. Devlin DeFrancesco was able to secure another top-five finish with fifth followed by Robert Megennis in eighth.

Frost will lead the field to green in Race 2 of the Cooper Tires Indy Lights Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio on Sunday. Coverage on Peacock will begin at 10:00 a.m. EST.

KYLE KIRKWOOD
No. 28 ROAD TO INDY / COOPER TIRES / CONTRACTION CONTRACTORS CLUB DALLARA
START FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP
1 1 1ST / 259 PTS.
OF NOTE: Led all 35 laps to capture his fifth Indy Lights victory of the 2021 season // Takes control of championship with a two-point lead // Will take the green from second in Sunday's Race 2
"I really feel like this should be our fourth win in a row. We had that mechanical issue in the last race at Road America in a race I feel like we should’ve won. To get this one here at Mid-Ohio, we’re back on a roll. We knew we were going to be really good here. We got the pole for today’s race, got second tomorrow – thanks to my teammate – in the second race. I’m absolutely stoked. I couldn’t be any happier with this outcome. We’re doing so good now. We took back the lead in points, which is really good after having the 10th-place finish at Road America, so it’s all working out. Everything is clicking."

DANIAL FROST
No. 68 DEN-JET DALLARA

START FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP
3 2 5TH / 178 PTS.
OF NOTE: Moved up to second during the race after David Malukas went off course // Collected his second-consecutive podium // Starts on pole position for Race 2 - third pole position of the season
"I feel really good. I think that was the best we could’ve gotten out of the car and position wise. Kyle (Kirkwood) did a good job managing his gap from me. I gave him all that I could. I think we can challenge him tomorrow, but today was going to be hard. Track position is everything here. I’m happy I was able to make up a position from the start, so it was a good race for me."

DEVLIN DEFRANCESCO
No. 17 POWERTAP DALLARA

Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport

START FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP
5 5 6TH / 173 PTS.
OF NOTE: Ran steady and consistent race to earn his fifth top-five finish of the season // Qualified fifth for tomorrow's Race 2
"Tricky day for us. The race pace was quite strong, but when you’re stuck in the dirty air there isn’t much you can do. I pushed until the end and saved some push-to-passes to the end, but it’s extremely hard to follow. I think it’s going to be a first lap attack tomorrow and you’re going to make or lose ground there, so that’s going to be where you can do it."

ROBERT MEGENNIS
No. 27 ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT DALLARA
START FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP
8 8 7TH / 169 PTS.
OF NOTE: Set to take Sunday's green flag from sixth
"The race was painful. I don’t know why we were so slow. I used the push-to-pass a little too early. It felt like there was no grip, but it seems like there was no grip for anyone. We’ll look through data tonight and we’ll be good for tomorrow."
