INDY LIGHTS PRESENTED BY COOPER TIRES

INDY LIGHTS GRAND PRIX OF PORTLAND PRESENTED BY COOPER TIRES
RACE 2 DEBRIEF
09.12.2021

It was a victorious day in Portland for Kyle Kirkwood and Andretti Autosport as Kirkwood saw the twin-checkers to win today's Indy Lights Grand Prix of Portland Presented by Cooper Tires Race 2. Kirkwood made a pass for the lead on Lap 2, moving up from his starting position of fourth and then went on to lead the remaining 29 laps. Robert Megennis drove a consistent race to bring home back-to-back top fives at Portland International Raceway. Teammates Danial Frost and Devlin DeFrancesco battled each other throughout the race and saw Frost ultimately make the pass to come home sixth.

The Andretti Autosport Indy Lights team continues their West Coast swing with Rounds 17 and 18 next weekend at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

OF NOTE: Took over the race lead on Lap 2 and went on to capture his seventh win of the 2021 Indy Lights season // Led 29 of 30 laps on his way to the win

"This win is huge. It was exactly what we needed today. We just didn't get it done in qualifying, but in both races we were just so fast. This one was maybe a little gifted because they [David Malukas and Linus Lundqvist] went down the inside and I was able to cross them up and go around the outside in Turn 2. I guess I was at the right place, right time. Today, our Andretti Autosport 28 car was absolutely on rails during the race. We were even really good on old tires. This win is crucial for our championship."

OF NOTE: Collected two consecutive top-five results at Portland and the 17th top five of his Indy Lights career

"Solid race. We started fifth, had a little bit of contact on the start with [Benjamin] Pedersen, then kind of drove around in fifth the whole race. Honestly, it was one of the more boring races I’ve done; it was awesome. I was trying to save my push-to-pass for the right moment to get around Pedersen, but it seemed like him and [Linus] Lundqvist were kind of working together to get moving forward and get after [David] Malukas. They were kind of leaving me behind with push-to-pass, so I fell back a little bit and that was what it was. I’m pretty happy with the weekend. We had good pace; all things considered. I’m excited for Laguna – excited to have good momentum and kind of keep things going."

OF NOTE: Battled against teammate Devlin DeFrancesco most of the race before making a move around DeFrancesco to take sixth place

"Coming to [Turn] 1, we started off sixth and we tried to avoid contact, so we lost a spot. But through the entire race, we were looking to try and make a move on the car in front of us. It took us a little bit longer than expected. Once we made the move, we seemed like we had very good pace - good enough pace to win the race - but being so far back and with only seven laps left in the race, we couldn’t do much. We tried to move forward and catch the guy in front of me, which was P5. Overall, this weekend was a pretty good note in terms of driving pace and how the team's been working. We’ve all done a great job, just not the results we’ve wanted. I think we are moving in the right direction so far and we just need to find a bit more in qualifying, get the car set up better for a better position and a better result."

OF NOTE: Moved up from ninth to sixth at the start of the race

"My start was pretty good. I was aggressive when it went green and I was able to make up a couple of spots down the inside. From then on, however, it was a bit of a struggle, but I pushed as hard as I could. I’m looking forward to putting this weekend behind us and setting our sights on Laguna Seca. We tested there at the very start of the year and it went very well, so I’m hoping we can replicate that next weekend."
