VP RACING FUELS GRAND PRIX OF MID-OHIO
PRESENTED BY COOPER TIRES
RACE 1 DEBRIEF
10.02.2021

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course as Kyle Kirkwood captured his 10th victory of the 2021 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires season. Kirkwood started today's race from pole position and held off David Malukas to lead all 30 laps around the 2.258-mile road course. Teammate Robert Megennis had an impressive start to jump up one position and join Kirkwood on the podium coming home in third. After two consecutive podiums at Mid-Ohio in July, Danial Frost came up just shy of another podium to finish Race 1 in fourth. As the field came to the green flag, Devlin DeFrancesco had his eyes set on breaking the top five from his starting position of sixth, but the shuffle of the start forced the Italian-Canadian back a few positions on a track that is known for difficult passing.

The 2021 Indy Lights Championship will wrap up Sunday with qualifying for Race 2 at 8:45 a.m. ET followed by the green flag for Race 2 at 12 p.m. ET. Both sessions will be livestreamed on roadtoindy.tvand the Road to Indy TV app.

KYLE KIRKWOOD
No. 28 ROAD TO INDY / COOPER TIRES / CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTORS CLUB DALLARA
START FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP
1 1 1ST / 520 PTS.
OF NOTE: Seventh-straight Road to Indy victory at Mid-Ohio
"First, I just want to say a huge thank you to the fans who made it out this weekend. We are the headliners here and we usually run with INDYCAR, so it’s so nice to see so many supporting us here for the Road to Indy. What a fantastic race for the Andretti crew. We couldn’t have asked for anything better. It may have looked ‘boring’, but it is because of all this hard work and dedication that we’ve put in. We were on the back foot a lot of this season and the second half, we’ve really come back a lot. A huge thank you to those guys. I don’t really know what to say. It’s one step closer to winning the championship. We just need to get the pole tomorrow and that’ll guarantee it for us if we start the race. I’m ecstatic right now."

ROBERT MEGENNIS
No. 27 ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT DALLARA
START FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP
4 3 6TH / 307 PTS.
OF NOTE: Earnedhis best Indy Lights finish at Mid-Ohio with today's podium
"It was a great race. We were super fast. The start was a little hairy - there were people going, stopping - it was a little crazy. I was able to get by Danial [Frost] and get up to third. We sat in third the whole time. I was catching [David] Malukas at the end. I wish I hadn’t made the mistake where I went off a little bit in Turn 9 a few laps in. He [Malukas] got a little gap and I was closing it back in, but didn’t have enough laps left to catch him. It’s awesome to get back on the podium."

DANIAL FROST
No. 68 DEN-JET DALLARA
START FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP
3 4 5TH / 323 PTS.
OF NOTE: Set the fastest lap of the race with a time of 01:12.5656
"We started third in Race 1. It seemed like we were going to do pretty well and contend for at least a podium. It looked like [David] Malukas jumped the start which caused a concertina effect and messed up our first few laps. We dropped a few places back, but we were able to reel in some places to finish fourth. It looked like our pace was really good, definitely good enough to win the race. I’m quite happy with my overall driving, but not quite with how the start went. We will review it and try to figure out a better way for tomorrow. We should definitely be able to finish on the podium tomorrow. I think today was just a hiccup. We were in the right position with our pace and will look at it for tomorrow."

DEVLIN DEFRANCESCO
No. 17 POWERTAP DALLARA

Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport
START FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP
6 9 7TH / 306 PTS.
OF NOTE: Has finished in the top 10 in 17 of his 19 Indy Lights starts // Received a post-race penalty of five seconds due to improper start procedure
"It has been a disappointing day but I’m fired up to bounce back tomorrow. My row checked up at the start and the inside row jumped us down into Turn 1. It was just a procession in the race. It is so hard to pass in these cars, very hard to pass around here, and even harder without push-to-pass this weekend. I had so much more pace than the guys around me but once you get close behind you lose all the front downforce. Getting the job done in qualifying is going to be key. We’ll keep working overnight to turn this around to finish strong tomorrow."
